I really wanted to like this book more than I did. When it started it has such promise...but then turned into something I wasn't expecting at all. I thought the characters were going to be on the run and escaping and learning about each other...but they escape in the first two chapters and then spend the rest of the story in a bar. Now, this is the first book I've read in the series, and that might be the problem but it was just not what I was expecting at all.The characters are the biggest problem I have with the story. Elin changes her mind on a dime and is constantly offended and angry with Thane...mostly just to have something to drive them apart. She jumps back and forth so quickly that it's hard to keep up with. And the chapter where she's drunk is WAY worse. Thane is attracted to her and wants to treat her differently...before he even knows her. There's no explanation as to why other than them going through the events at the Phoenix camp together. Oh, and she's hot. My biggest character gripe is the four other barmaids. They are thrown at the reader very quickly. They all look different are of different species, but they all act pretty much the same. All crack jokes and are vain...and that's about it. There's no personality with them that sets them apart so I just gave up trying to remember what they looked like or what species they were.
Another problem I had was that it felt like conflict was added simply to have conflict. I get that Thane is a warrior and on a mission to fight demons, but I found myself not reading the parts when he was in battle because it didn't matter. Why couldn't the conflict just have focused on the other Phoenix? I haven't finished the book, usually I would have by now...and that's why I felt the need to write this review. It's been a long time since I saw so much promise in a book and it fell short. Also, I hated all the boulder dodging things...maybe I just don't like anything that has to do with the barmaids. Seriously though, why would you put a half human on a team where people literally throw boulders at each other? One wrong move and she's dead.
As far as things I did like, I liked when the story was darker. Seeing Elin struggle with the sight of blood and her past was compelling. As much as I didn't like the barmaids, I actually really liked the friendship between Thane and the other two Sent Ones. I liked the back and forth of Elin and Thane at first but it went on a little too long. Again, conflict out of nothing. One time was literally, "We were intimate and you got tense for a second afterwards. You must regret everything! BYE!" And then it goes back to, "But the chemistry is too strong, I can't stay away," in the next chapter.
At this point, I don't think I'll check out the other books in this series or from Showalter. I think I'll stick with the Immortals After Dark series. At least in those books the undeniable attraction makes sense and conflict doesn't arise out of nowhere...for the most part. Not a bad book but disappointing for sure.

I enjoyed all of the different subplots going on in this book. Thane was quite busy -- dominating sexual partners, fighting Demons and Phoenix, getting in trouble with his Boss, discovering a major enemy, trying to help his best friend, and finally falling in love with a woman half human, half his-dreaded-enemy Phoenix. And having sex, lots of it.
If only the Heroine wasn't such an airhead. Her waffling back and forth made me dizzy. But hey, no accounting for taste. I did enjoy the brief visits from Lucien and Anya. It would be nice if there was more interaction in future books. And I will be reading future books, because I continue to enjoy them. Even if I do complain.
I really liked this book a lot. Might have been my fav of the Angels of the Dark Series. I loved all of them. This one was funny, witty, exciting and the story was great. Elin got on my nerves just a little and I felt she was a little annoying at times. I just didn't feel a connection to her like I did with the females in the other Angel Series books. But this one was still my fav. I very disappointed the series stops here as I would love to see what happens with Bjorn, Xerxes and esp Axel as he is my favorite Angel. Hope Gena decides to continue these or merge their stories into the Lords series so we know what happens to these characters she has created for us.
This book is about Thane, one of the sent ones. The dark angels sent to kill demons, Zachrael leader of the Army of Disgrace, is Thane's boss. This book above all the others I read of Gena Showalter, was the darkest. The first 100 pages were actually hard to read. The was so much dark in the beginning and little to no light it was hard to get through the first part of the book, for me at least. Eventually it balanced out. Elin Vale rescues Thane from phoenix enslavement in the beginning, he then brings her to his club, in the third level of the skies, to make enough money to get back on her feet. Both come from extensive abusive pasts, Thane more determined not to change anything about himself. Elin is his light in the dark, despite himself and his poor behavior, Elin is equally drawn to him. This is the third in the series, I greatly look forward to this parallel story to the Lords of the Underworld series.
